The Intergalactic Book Tag

What in the world is the Intergalactic Book Tag, you may ask? Well, never fear, Meg is here to let you in on this tag that is trending in the Young Adult book community! The Intergalactic Book Tag was  created to center around and promote the release of the new Young Adult, science fiction novel Starflight by Melissa Landers. Starflight was released earlier this month and it is published by Disney-Hyperion (yes the same wonderful people that have brought us the AMAZING Percy Jackson series). Now, we have yet to pick up this intriguing novel here at Twin Reads, but that’s not going to stop me from giving you guys a quick synopsis!

Starflight is about a young, orphan girl named Solara Brooks. Solara has just left the orphanage and is now looking for a fresh start in life, but the only way she can do that is by going to the outer realm– a world known for the tough, lawless and derelict existence it offers. Why is this desolate place the only world where she can start anew? Well, Solara is a felon forced to live her life with the crimes of her past permanently tattooed across her knuckles. There isn’t much opportunity for that new beginning she so desperately desires, and with her less-than-stellar reputation she struggles to find passage to the outer realm. Finally, she has no other choice but to indenture herself in exchange for passage in order to begin her journey toward her future life.

Tandem by Anna Jarzab

This is the book that got me back into science fiction. The first in the Many-Worlds trilogy, it is about ordinary, 16-year-old girl Sasha Lawson, until she finds out she is not as ordinary as she thought. She finds herself thrown into a parallel universe (one of many) where the alternate version of herself, and who she herself must pretend to be, is a missing princess of a country in a precarious political position. I can’t think of anything more out of this world than an alternate universe! Can you?

Blackhole: Name a book that sucked you in…

Into Thin Air by John Krakauer

I read this because I had picked it out as a memoir to read in one of my high school classes. I wasn’t super interested in it. I didn’t love Into the Wild, but I needed something to read. I was actually planning on reading Crossed by Allie Condie one weekend when I instead sat down to read a chapter or two of Into Thin Air for homework. Guess what book didn’t get finished. Crossed. Guess what book did get finished (and in one day, I might add). Yep, you guessed it, Into Thin Air. If that doesn’t intrigue you, I don’t know what will. Krakauer recounts the incidents of his real-life experience climbing Mount Everest in 1996– the year of the Mount Everest Disaster– and a year of many lives lost on the mountain.

Lightspeed: Name a book you are anticipating so much you would travel at light speed to get it…

The Fate of the Tearling by Erika Johansen.

This series is so gripping, intense, and in-depth. The magic, characters, and world are unlike anything I have ever read before. I cannot wait to get my hands on this third and final book in the Queen of the Tearling trilogy. Check out this earlier blog post to hear more about this series.

The Infernal Devices By Cassandra Clare

The Mortal Instruments series is one of my favorite book series of all time. I love it. I love the world. So, when I heard that Cassandra Clare would be writing more in the world of the Shadowhunters with a prequel to the Mortal Instruments series, I had to read it. I actually might like this series more than the Mortal Instruments. It follows three characters, Tessa Gray, William Herondale, and Jem Carstairs, as they fight demons and clockwork automatons, all while attempting to unravel a dark and vicious plot in Victorian London.

Gravity: Name your favorite romantic pairing where the characters seemed pulled together…

My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick

This is quite literally THE CUTEST BOOK. I’m not kidding you. Jase and Samantha are the epitome of the sweetest couple. It’s a great novel full of family, love, and friendship. It reminded me of everything that is so wonderful about human companionship in any form. Basically, I adore this book and its entire cast of quirky characters. Read it. I guarantee it will make you heart swell. And if you’re anything like me, you will find yourself with a huge grin on your face, smiling at no one and nothing in particular, more times than you can count.

The Big Bang: Name the book that got you into reading…

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Of course I had read a lot of books before the Hunger Games (yes, I know its not Harry Potter, but I actually came late to that party), but this was the one that turned me into the avid reader I am today. It’s action-packed, fast-paced, and full of strong characters and intense plot points. I could not put it down and after that all I could think about was reading it again, and again, and again.

I know, I know, I know, this is actually a collection of short stories, but I love them all so much I could not pick just one. This compilation is filled with Christmas, New Years, and other holiday-themed stories that are magical, whimsical, funny and romantic. The PERFECT winter, holiday read.

Galaxy: Name a book with multiple points of view…

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

Six of Crows is a new novel by Leigh Bardugo that is set in the same world as her previous series, the Grisha Trilogy. It follows a rag-tag cast of characters as they take on the biggest, toughest, most dangerous, and most intricate heist imaginable. The story is expertly woven together through the viewpoints of five of the characters, keeping the reader in a perfect balance of knowing and waiting in suspense to see if the different aspects of the heist succeed!

Spaceship: Name a book you would name a spaceship after…

Passenger by Alexandra Bracken

I’m kind of going for a pun with this one, but I’m not sure how it’ll go down. What better name for something that offers passage (like a spaceship) than the Passenger? Eh? Eh? Am I right? Okay, nobody? In all seriousness, I just wanted to find a way to fit this book in here because it is AWESOME, to say the least. It follows a young violinist named Etta, as she is thrust into the world her mother has hidden from her her entire life– the world of time travel.
