Cover Love #3

So, one more time, before we get into this newest Cover Love post, we are going to explain what Cover Love is and the reasoning behind it, so, here we go!

We all know it, though we might not all admit it– we tend to judge a book by its cover. When the content on the inside is just as good as on the outside, well, that’s just an added bonus. Right? All jokes aside though, the cover of a book is actually extremely important in a reader’s decision to buy. The book cover has many purposes– to catch the eye of the reader, to portray the content within the book and to just… look… nice, gosh darn-it! Basically, the cover matters (as much as we readers like to say otherwise).

So, the point of Cover Love is to stop giving cover design such a bad reputation! Just as there is art in the form of words on the inside of a book, there is art in the form of cover design on the outside of a book. Thus, Cover Love was created to appreciate the hard work and effort that goes into cover design. We here at Twin Reads will post one cover a week and tell you about why we like it. Let’s give those cover designers some love!

The cover we love this week is…

Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge

15839984

This intriguing and beautiful piece of cover art was done by designer Erin Fitzsimmons. We love the way the pattern of the rose petals seems to combine with the unending spiral staircase. The single figure in the top corner of the design draws the eye of viewer, making them stop and wonder why this young girl is seemingly stuck, frantically running down this spiral staircase with no end or destination in sight. The spiraling design of the staircase and rose also brings the eye toward the title and author, allowing the viewer’s eye to naturally rest on the important text. Overall, the elements of this cover create an intriguing and consuming design—one that makes the reader stop and wonder.

Just as the cover design creates a sense of intrigue and curiosity, so does the story within. Cruel Beauty is a unique story based off of Beauty and the Beast. It follows a young, hateful and resentful girl named Nyx who is forced to marry the evil ruler of her world, Ignifex, due to her father’s past mistake. Nyx finds herself caught in a centuries old plot that will create consequences in more than just her life as she attempts to explore her new home that’s hallways and rooms are as deceptive as any maze.

Nyx is a complicated character who’s actions are never predictable and so is the story of Cruel Beauty. It is suspenseful, intriguing, and so far out of this world that you’ll find yourself unable to put it down. You’ll be as much in the dark about what will happen next as the characters. That is what makes this book so unique and the cover design reflects that ongoing curiosity.

What do you think of this cover? Do you find it as eye-catching as we do? Have you read Cruel Beauty? Let us know in the comments!
