To get a more in-depth description of what Cover Love is you can check out our first Cover Love post! In the meantime, here is this week’s Cover Love!

The cover we love this week is…

Walk on Earth a Stranger by Rae Carson

This beautiful cover was designed by Neil Swaab. We love the majestic landscape, complete with mountains and sunset which engulf the girl, who appears lonesome—a stranger—in the vast world around her. The cover sparkles with the gold lettering and font of the title and author as well as the speckled gold which magically and intricately flows from the ground to the lonely girl above. The ground takes up the majority of the cover, leaving plenty of space for the gold speckles to lay deep in the soil beneath the girl’s feet, emphasizing the way her power to find gold stretches far, wide, and deep across the earth.

Walk on Earth a Stranger is a Young Adult fantasy novel set during the Gold Rush in America. Lee Westfall, a young girl from Georgia, with a strange and endangering power—the ability to sense gold all around her— is forced to flee from her home and make her way to the only place that seems safe, and the only place she believes she can make a new life for herself—California. A place far enough away from anyone who might know her secret.

By placing the single, solitary girl amidst a vast landscape, this cover design beautifully represents the solitude that Lee Westfall feels in the book as she is forced to hide her true ability and identity from all those around her.  The shimmering gold speckles on the cover relentlessly surround the girl, just as the pull of gold grips Lee in the story. Finally, the warm tones of the cover mirror the landscape of the American west—the dangerous and unforgiving setting Lee travels across within the novel.

Suffice to say, we think this cover is gorgeous! It captures perfectly the plot and story of Walk on Earth a Stranger. What do you guys think of this cover? Have you read the book? If so, do you think the cover represents the story as well as we do? Let us know in the comments!
